Hearing Loss Effects Servicemen From All Branches of The Military

Army Earplug Lawsuit News

Hundreds of weapons can cause hearing damage as can certain military support occupations

Wednesday, November 20, 2019 - Having perfect hearing is one of the most essential physical capabilities that a soldier must possess to do his job, keep himself safe, and keep his fellow soldiers out of unnecessary harm. Hearing loss is not limited to the Army and effects veterans from every branch of the military. Soldiers fighting on land are exposed to hearing damaging noise from rifle fire, shotguns, pistols, hand grenades, anti-tank weapons, and continuous high decibel noise while being inside armored vehicles. Navy personnel are exposed ear-splitting constant decibel levels while working in engine rooms, on landing and patrol vessels, during missile fire and of course while working launching and landing jets and helicopters on the deck of an aircraft carrier. In the Air Force, personnel can lose hearing from servicing helicopters and jet engines.

More and more soldiers that have returned home from wars overseas having been inflicted with life-long, permanent, irreversible hearing loss, are consulting with army earplug lawyers to determine if they qualify to file a claim for lump-sum monetary damages. The Dual-Sided Combat Army Earplug, manufactured by 3M Inc., failed to protect soldier's hearing during combat operations as well as when wearing the device during routine occupational duties. As a result of the hearing device's mass failure, hundreds of thousands of soldiers have filed for military disability benefits costing taxpayers billions of dollars every year. 3M Inc. fraudulently represented the product's safety features to the US government and defrauded taxpayers all the while reaping billions of dollars in unearned profits each year from 2003 until the present. Soldiers also experienced hearing loss from firing or being near a multitude of military weapons and machinery. All of the above sentiments are echoed by the National Institute of Health's assessment of military-related noises on hearing damage.

The NIH writes: "Hearing plays a vital role in the performance of a soldier and is important for speech processing. Noise-induced hearing loss is a significant impairment in the military and can affect combat performance. Almost every soldier, sailor, airman or marine will be exposed to hazardous noise levels at some point in their career." The NIH cites the Veterans Administration report that has determined that tinnitus and hearing loss affects around one-quarter of one million military veterans as of fiscal year 20112. In the 8 years since that number has increased significantly to close to one-half of a million military veterans. The NIH acknowledges that the ability to hear properly can have life or death consequences. A soldier's reliance on hearing protection is a critical element of their ability to fight. The NIH stated" "Hearing acuity is a key component of a soldier's effectiveness in the battlefield. The presence of tinnitus and hearing loss can significantly impair a soldier's ability to hear important acoustic cues or communication signals from the unit or the enemy."
