Improvised Explosive Devices Caused More Serious Army Injuries Than Any Other Enemy Weapon

Army Earplug Lawsuit News

For every US soldier killed by a blast from an IED, a thousand were seriously injured and ten times more than that may have experienced permanent, irreversible hearing damage

Thursday, February 6, 2020 - Thousands of soldiers that fought in overseas wars in Afghanistan, the Persian Gulf, and elsewhere were injured and partially or completely disabled due to a malfunction in the smallest possible piece of safety equipment imaginable, their hearing protection. Soldiers were issued and trained to wear and use the Dual-Sided Combat Army Earplug manufactured by defense contractor 3M and relied on the device for battlefield protection particularly in the case of the enemy's improvised explosive devices (IEDs) which soldiers faced every day. As a result of the failure of the safety device, a record number of soldiers suffered permanent hearing damage or tinnitus, the constant ringing in the ears and are now costing the US taxpayer billions in medical disability income payments, now and for decades to come. Thousands of military veterans have filed suit alleging that the 3M Dual-Sided Combat Army earplugs are too short and do not provide a sufficiently snug fit to block high-decibel blasts and repetitive loud noises from entering the ear canal. An Army Earplug lawyer can provide veterans with a free consultation to see if they qualify to join others who have filed claims against 3M for their negligence. Soldiers with hearing damage could qualify for substantial lump sum compensation.

Enemy IEDs could be found anywhere in the battle theater from under a rock by the side of a road, to a room that soldiers had just entered, to underneath a woman's burka or around the torso of small children. Everyone and everywhere was a potential instant battlefield as the overmatched enemy improvised what they could to attack US troops they viewed as enemy invaders. To get a feel for just how often IEDs were deployed by the enemy, Wikipedia authors write: "In the 2003-2011 Iraq War, IEDs have been used extensively against Coalition forces and by the end of 2007 they have (had) been responsible for at least 64% of Coalition deaths in Iraq. Beginning in July 2003, the Iraqi insurgency used IEDs to target invading coalition vehicles." To this day, generals in the Army looking back and writing about the war feel that the military lost in Iraq because it failed to counter the siege of enemy explosive devices.

According to War On The Rocks.com, over time enemy IEDs became easier and cheaper for the enemy to make and more and more deadly requiring the US military to retool the Humvee military vehicle with tank-like armor plating in an attempt shield soldiers from the blasts. These safety upgrades did little to protect a soldier's hearing from the blast. To try and avoid IED attacks, US troops traveled at a high rate of speed and off-road through private properties to safely get from point A to B. Empty intersections were avoided. Intelligence estimate that over 30,000 US soldiers were seriously injured by IEDs and over 3000 killed.
