Suppliers of defective combat protective devices defraud the US taxpayers of millions of dollars and put soldier's lives at risk

Tuesday, October 15, 2019 - The credibility or lack thereof of whistleblowers is making news today for political reasons, however, company informants play a key role in reimbursing taxpayers for fraud, and also in protecting people's lives. There have been a number of high-profile stories where an individual has come forward and reported wrongdoings by a military vendor, nefarious activities that would otherwise have gone unnoticed and unpunished. Failing to report a product malfunction can cause a soldier to be injured or killed. An employee of 3M Inc, maker of the defective 3M Combat Army Earplug recently blew the whistle using the False Claims Act to report the defects of the hearing protection device. The False Claims Act protects and enables employees of companies that are fulfilling government contacts to reports defective military safety devices. Army earplug attorneys offer a free consultation no obligation to American Veteran's and their families that suffered hearing loss and seek compensation for the harm resulting from 3M CAEv2 army earplugs.

The US government and the US military, in particular, have the well-deserved reputation of being oversized, bloated bureaucracies where excessive spending and a lack of accountability are the norms. We have all read the stories of the government paying five hundred dollars for a hammer or a thousand dollars for a toilet seat and no one was held accountable. Recently 3M sold millions of dollars worth of defective Combat Earplugs to the military, an act for which they are being held accountable. Under the False Claims Act, a former employee of 3M reported that executives at the company knew that the earplugs were defective yet represented them to the military as a safe and essential hearing protection device. Thousand of US service members have lost their hearing or have suffered permanent tinnitus from the defects of the 3M Army Earplug and are now suing 3M for monetary damages.

As a result of the whistleblower lawsuit, 3M Inc. was forced to pay $9.1 million to reimburse taxpayers for their fraud. The False Claims Act is the federal Government's primary method of litigating fraud against the government and also in protecting those that are brave enough to come forward. Whistleblowers work directly with the Department of Justice and are awarded up to 25% of the amount of the money recovered from vendors that have been found guilty. According to Wikipedia, "The government recovered $38.9 billion under the False Claims Act between 1987 and 2013." Hearing loss has become the number one reason a military veteran files for disability income benefits from the Veterans Administration, costing US taxpayers billions of dollars.

As a result of the whistleblower lawsuit against 3M, soldiers that have suffered hearing damages have come forward to file claims against 3M for monetary compensation. According to The Military Times "The Minnesota-based 3M Company allegedly sold its dual-ended Combat Arms Earplugs, Version 2, to the Defense Logistics Agency without disclosing defects that decreased the actual effectiveness of the hearing protection the device offered."
